ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigerian national football team player Victor Osimhen spoke publicly on June 17, 2026, regarding the country’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Okay News reports that Osimhen and the Super Eagles suffered elimination against DR Congo during the continental playoffs after finishing second in their qualification group.
“It’s bad, not just for me but for the rest of the guys,” Osimhen said. “We’ve missed out twice in a row. Sometimes life happens, so we just have to keep moving.”
The expanded 2026 tournament features 48 teams. Africa received nine automatic qualification spots and an additional playoff berth for the competition.
The national team last played in the tournament in 2018.
