OSOGBO, Nigeria: The government of Osun State directed its legal team on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, to sue the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission after the agency froze the state’s bank accounts.
Osun State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwole Jimi-Bada, announced the legal action following a directive from the anti-graft agency to the government’s primary bank. Okay News reports that Oluwole Jimi-Bada confirmed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission forwarded a ‘Post no debit’ letter to the management of First Bank where the state accounts are domiciled.
Oluwole Jimi-Bada stated he received approval from Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke to file a lawsuit at the Federal High Court. “I have the mandate of the governor to proceed to the Federal High Court to challenge this move. EFCC can investigate the accounts but it can’t freeze the accounts without order of court,” Oluwole Jimi-Bada said.
The commissioner said the frozen accounts would impact government business. “This step will affect government running but we will challenge the move and ensure that the agency acts within the ambit of the law,” Oluwole Jimi-Bada said.
Osun State Commissioner for Finance, Sola Ogungbile, said police operatives entered the main branch of First Bank in Osogbo and arrested staff members of the bank. Sola Ogungbile stated that Ademola Adeleke is not using state funds to finance his reelection campaigns.
Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, released a statement indicating the agency was planning to freeze the accounts of top government functionaries. “The plot to freeze the state government accounts is meant to paralyze government activities ahead of the August 15th governorship election,” the statement read.
