‘Our Lives Are in Danger, ’ El-Rufai’s Wife Claims She Is Being Monitored

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

KADUNA, Nigeria — Hajiya Asia El-Rufai, one of the wives of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has alleged that she and Aishatou El-Rufai are being monitored and placed under surveillance, raising concerns about their safety.

Okay News reports that Asia El-Rufai made the allegation in a post published on Facebook, where she claimed that unidentified persons were following both women and that their mobile phones had been compromised.

According to her, the situation has created fears for their personal safety. She further stated that the government should be held accountable should any harm come to either of them.

“They are following me and Aisattou, let the world know that if anything happens to us the Government should explain. Our phones are bugged… our lives are in danger!” she wrote.

The allegation comes days after Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, son of the former governor and a member of the House of Representatives representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency, expressed concern over what he described as the unlawful detention of his father.

In a Democracy Day message released on June 12, Bello El-Rufai argued that the continued detention of the former governor raised broader concerns about civil liberties, due process and the protection of citizens’ rights in Nigeria.

Neither the Federal Government nor security agencies had publicly responded to Asia El-Rufai’s allegations as of the time of filing this report. No independent evidence has yet been presented to substantiate the claims of surveillance or phone monitoring.

The latest development adds to the growing controversy surrounding the circumstances involving the former Kaduna State governor and members of his family.
