NIGERIA — The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, attended the inauguration of the City Boy Movement‘s Lagos State chapter executive committee on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, prompting public criticism and calls for his suspension from opposition groups.
Okay News reports that the Nigeria Democratic Congress, an opposition political party, issued a statement on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, demanding the immediate suspension and sanction of CP Tijani Fatai by the Nigeria Police Force authorities.
Video footage circulating on social media showed CP Tijani Fatai arriving at the venue in Ikeja in full uniform and walking through the gathering alongside security personnel and attendees wearing campaign paraphernalia associated with President Bola Tinubu and Seyi Tinubu. The City Boy Movement operates as a youth-led sociopolitical organisation aligned with President Bola Tinubu‘s political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“We condemn in the strongest terms the appearance of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani, at a partisan event promoting a particular candidate in the upcoming general election,” the Nigeria Democratic Congress said.
Former All Progressives Congress presidential candidate aide Bashir Ahmad defended the police chief’s presence on social media, stating that CP Tijani Fatai attended the gathering to oversee law enforcement duties.
“Obviously, he was there to help provide security and order, not to join the movement,” Bashir Ahmad said.
Neither the Lagos State Police Command nor the Nigeria Police Force headquarters had issued an official statement regarding the event or the opposition party’s demands as of Wednesday, July 29, 2026.
