Ibadan, Oyo State, NIGERIA — Sani Salisu Basaura, a young trader and commercial motorcyclist from Jega, Kebbi State has been reported dead after his encounter with policemen in the Akinyele area of Ibadan, Oyo State.
The incident, which allegedly occurred on Friday, April 24, 2026, has sparked fresh outcries over police conduct and the use of force during routine enforcement activities.
According to accounts provided by the deceased’s cousin, Ayuba Aliyu Basaura, Sani had recently returned to Ibadan to resume his trading activities. Due to a temporary lack of capital for his foodstuff business, he had taken up commercial motorcycling (okada) to support his family.
Okay News gathered that during an encounter with officers from the Akinyele Area Kara Police Station, an attempt to seize Sani’s motorcycle escalated into a struggle. It is alleged that an officer struck Sani in the chest near his heart, causing him to vomit blood before he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
The Basaura family, based in Kebbi State, is mourning the loss of a son described as the eldest child of his living father and a hardworking provider who had just celebrated the recent Sallah festivities at home. The family and community leaders are now calling on the Oyo State Police Command and the Police Complaint Response Unit (CRU) to launch an immediate investigation into the conduct of the officers at the Akinyele Area Kara station.
Advocates for justice are demanding that the officers involved be identified and held accountable under the law to prevent further erosion of public trust. The incident adds to the weight of extra judicial killings by armed officers. Okay News had earlier reported that a youth was shot dead in Effurun, Delta State, by ASP Usman Nuhu, a police officer, over an allegation of receiving a gun. This is against the backdrop of the killing of AbdulSamad Jamiu, a National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) member in his family home in Abuja.
