Nigeria’s election into the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council, Category C, is being credited to the leadership of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, according to the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA).
NACCIMA President Alhaji Jani Ibrahim said Oyetola’s strategic reforms, international engagements and sector-wide coordination were central to securing the seat, which strengthens Nigeria’s influence within the global maritime community and across sub-Saharan Africa.
He said Nigeria’s maritime administration has earned renewed global confidence under Oyetola, allowing the nation to reassert itself as a key voice in international shipping and maritime governance.
The association also acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the administration’s policy direction has reinforced maritime development, blue-economy growth and security reforms through stronger institutional frameworks.
Ibrahim stated that the election outcome reflects joint efforts from the Federal Government, the minister, maritime regulators and industry stakeholders working to elevate Nigeria’s standing in the global maritime sector. He added that the victory signals Nigeria’s commitment to maritime safety, environmental responsibility, capacity development and sustainable blue-economy expansion.
He said NACCIMA will continue collaborating with the minister, maritime agencies and stakeholders to ensure Nigeria sustains its position and builds on the momentum achieved through the IMO Council membership.
