The Oyo State Government has initiated steps to resolve lingering boundary conflicts affecting twelve local government areas within the state, okaynews.com reports.
The affected councils include Ibadan South West and Oluyole; Oyo East and Afijio; Kajola and Iwajowa; Akinyele and Afijio; Saki West and Atisbo; Ibarapa Central and Ibarapa East; as well as Agbaa and Oko communities within Surulere Local Government Area.
A peace meeting involving representatives from the concerned areas was recently convened at the Mediation Center, Ministry of Justice, located within the State Secretariat in Ibadan. The session was facilitated by the government to foster dialogue and restore harmony among the disputing communities.
Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal—who also chairs the State Boundary Committee—urged all parties to abide by previous rulings on the disputes and refrain from inciting unrest in their communities.
In a statement released in Ibadan on Saturday, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, stressed the importance of peaceful resolution.
He noted that both interstate and internal boundary disagreements must be addressed constructively, emphasizing that a responsible administration prioritizes the prevention of violence and bloodshed.
Oyelade also pointed out that the boundary committee was established in line with constitutional provisions and carries full legal authority.
“The disputes between Ibadan South West and Oluyole Local Government Areas, Akinyele and Afijio Local Government Areas were adjourned respectively until the next boundary meeting, which will be communicated to all parties concerned.”
“The committee adopted judgments from the High Court and Appeal Court for the boundary dispute between Kajola and Iwajowa Local Government Areas, while Oyo East and Afijio Local Government Areas were informed that they should expect a verdict regarding their cases.
“The committee still needs more legal documents and evidence from the two parties regarding the dispute between Saki West and Atisbo local government areas.”
