IBADAN, Nigeria — The Oyo State Police Command has dismissed as false and misleading a social media claim alleging that schoolchildren and teachers abducted from Ahoro-Esiele and Yawota communities in Orire Local Government Area were transported to Kaduna State by helicopter.
Okay News reports that the police described the viral video carrying the allegation as unverified, unfounded and lacking any credible evidence. According to the command, the information does not meet the standard of authenticity required for matters involving public safety and ongoing security operations.
The police said intensive efforts to rescue the victims remain underway, with security and intelligence agencies working together to secure the safe release of the abducted children and teachers. Authorities added that operations have been strengthened to ensure the victims are reunited with their families while those responsible for the abduction are tracked down and prosecuted.
The command expressed concern over what it described as deliberate attempts by some individuals to spread misinformation capable of undermining public confidence in rescue efforts. It warned that false reports could create unnecessary panic, mislead residents and interfere with security operations.
Police authorities cautioned members of the public against sharing unverified information, especially on issues relating to security, and said individuals found to be originating or circulating malicious content intended to discredit security agencies would face legal consequences.
The command urged residents to remain calm and rely only on information released through official and verified channels. It also reassured the public that all available resources are being deployed to secure the safe return of the abducted pupils and teachers.
