Abuja, Nigeria — High-ranking leaders from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) convened for a private stakeholders’ meeting on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. The high-level discussions took place in the Apo district of Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria, at the private residence of David Mark, who previously served as the President of the Senate.

The Peoples Democratic Party, which is Nigeria’s main opposition platform, confirmed the commencement of the talks through a statement on its verified social media account. The meeting featured several influential political figures, including the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, and the Governor of Oyo State in Southwest Nigeria, Seyi Makinde. Also present at the gathering were the former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, and other prominent opposition personalities.

This meeting matters because it signals a potential realignment of political forces in the West African nation as parties begin to strategize for the 2027 general elections. The core of the discussion focused on fostering cooperation between the two organizations to create a more formidable opposition front. Okay News reports that the engagement occurs at a time when both institutions are navigating significant internal challenges.

The Peoples Democratic Party has been dealing with long-standing disagreements regarding its national convention and leadership structure. Similarly, the African Democratic Congress is currently embroiled in a leadership crisis. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the government body that oversees elections in Nigeria, recently withdrew its recognition of rival factions within the African Democratic Congress following a ruling by the Court of Appeal.

The outcome of these talks could significantly affect the Nigerian electorate and the future of the country’s multi-party system. While there has been a noticeable movement of politicians between these two platforms recently, no formal agreement or official communiqué was released immediately following the session. The political landscape remains fluid as these groups explore a unified path forward.
