Abuja, NIGERIA – The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the arrest of Ewa Okpo, the Publicity Secretary of its Akwa Ibom State chapter, following a petition filed by Senator Effiong Bob.
The opposition party stated that Okpo was detained by police officers at the Quick Intervention Unit in Ikot Akpan Abia over matters connected to his right to free speech. Okay News reports that the national secretariat described the dispute as purely civil in nature and one that did not require law enforcement intervention.
In response to the development, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Comrade Ini Ememobong, announced that the party has directed its legal department to intervene immediately. A high-powered legal team is being assembled to provide full representation for the detained official and other members allegedly targeted by political opponents.
The party cautioned highly placed individuals against using security agencies to intimidate perceived political rivals. The PDP reiterated its commitment to defending its officials and members nationwide against any form of harassment aimed at suppressing their constitutional rights.
