ABUJA, Nigeria: Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) denied the existence of a leadership vacuum within the organisation on Friday, May 1, 2026, following a recent Supreme Court judgment.
Okay News reports that the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, stated during a news conference in Abuja that Abdulrahman Mohammed remains the legitimate national chairman.
Jungudo Mohammed said the apex court ruling on Thursday focused exclusively on the legality of a convention held in Ibadan and did not impact the current National Working Committee. “Let it be clear and unambiguous that the Supreme Court judgment of yesterday only nullified the illegal Ibadan Convention and dismissed the appeal filed by the Turaki-led purported NWC for lacking in merit,” he said.
He stated the judgment did not uphold any suspension or expulsion of party officers, as those issues were not presented before the Federal High Court, the Court of Appeal, or the Supreme Court. “The apex court addressed only the matter before it, which is the validity or otherwise of the so-called Nov. 15 and Nov. 16 Ibadan Convention,” he said.
The leadership structure remains operational under Abdulrahman Mohammed and the National Secretary, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu. “What we are witnessing is a desperate attempt by a rejected group to twist the clear facts contained in the judgement of the Supreme Court in order to mislead the public and seek undeserved sympathy,” Jungudo Mohammed said.
The spokesperson dismissed claims of a takeover by the Board of Trustees, stating the PDP Constitution does not grant the body power to assume leadership functions. He noted that the tenure of Sen. Adolphus Wabara as Board of Trustees chairman had expired and identified Sen. Mao Ohuabunwa as the legitimate leader of the board.
