The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the postponement of the screening exercise for aspirants ahead of its 2025 Elective National Convention earlier scheduled for Tuesday, October 28, 2025.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee and Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri.
According to Fintiri, the decision to shift the screening date was due to “unforeseen circumstances.”
He explained that the committee would announce a new date for the exercise in due course, assuring party members and aspirants of transparent communication.
“A new date will be communicated once fixed,” Fintiri stated. “The NCOC regrets any inconvenience caused by the postponement. All aspirants and members of our party should note the foregoing and be guided accordingly.”
Okay News reports that the committee reaffirmed its readiness to ensure a credible and hitch-free national convention despite the change in schedule.
The 2025 Elective National Convention, which is expected to hold between November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State, is regarded as a crucial moment for the opposition party ahead of the next general elections.
Meanwhile, the postponement came just hours after a former Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, declared his interest in contesting for the position of National Chairman.
This development followed the endorsement of former Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, as the northern consensus candidate by a group of PDP stakeholders — a move that has sparked internal disagreements among party leaders.
Some factions within the PDP, including loyalists of Lamido and former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, have reportedly rejected Turaki’s endorsement, insisting that the process “lacked proper consultation.”
The growing division comes as the party seeks to reposition itself amid recent resignations and internal restructuring efforts ahead of the convention.
