ABUJA, Nigeria – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised the alarm over what it describes as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)’s manipulation of national institutions to subvert the country’s democracy ahead of the next presidential elections.
In a press statement seen Okay News, and issued on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the opposition party alleged that the APC intends to win the upcoming elections “at all costs, by hook or crook.”
The PDP accused the ruling party of using sacred and fragile institutions—including the judiciary, the clergy, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)—as executioners of this agenda. The party warned that for the APC, “no boundary is respected, and nothing is too much to sacrifice—including derailing democracy, truncating the republic, and destroying Nigeria.”
The statement specifically condemned INEC’s recent derecognition of the David Mark-led National Working Committee of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The PDP argued that INEC’s interpretation of legal and political matters consistently appears to favour the ruling party, “effectively handing a colourful coronation to its appointor and the incumbent president.”
Furthermore, Ememobong expressed concern over recent political party monitoring activities published by the Commission, citing rumours that these actions are designed to result in the deregistration of opposition parties.
Appealing to all national institutions to resist the influence of appointing authorities, the PDP urged them to prioritize the nation above partisan interests. “This is a critical moment in our democratic journey, where the fragility and vulnerability of the polity are being tested to their limits,” the statement read. Warning that the patience of Nigerians should not be stretched beyond its bounds, the party called on all stakeholders to adopt a “country-first” disposition to ensure that Nigeria and its democracy survive.
