Peter Obi Emerges Sole NDC Presidential Aspirant

ABUJA, Nigeria — Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, became the sole presidential aspirant for the 2027 election under the Nigeria Democratic Congress after the party concluded the sale of forms on Sunday, May 17, 2026.

Okay News reports that the National Secretary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, said the collection of Expression of Interest Forms for the office of the President has officially closed. The party extended the deadline for the collection of forms for other elective positions, including governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State Houses of Assembly seats, to 12 midnight WAT on Sunday, May 24, 2026. This extension followed the original deadline of 6:00 p.m. WAT on Sunday, May 17, 2026.

Screening of aspirants who have purchased and completed the forms will commence on Tuesday, May 19, and conclude on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. The Nigeria Democratic Congress disclosed that the collection and return of Nomination Forms for screened and cleared aspirants will begin on May 20 and end on May 26, 2026. The party stated that no further extension will be granted beyond the new deadline.

All aspirants were directed to appear for screening and pre-qualification interviews at designated venues with relevant documents including educational certificates, birth certificates, voter cards, and party membership cards. All documents submitted to the Screening Committee must be provided in six copies. The screening process will be based on electorate wishes, local peculiarities, capacity, character, and competence.

The party instructed the Screening Committee to consider the affirmative action policy for women, youths, and persons living with disabilities. Aspirants were encouraged to embrace consensus-building during the process. Only aspirants cleared through the screening will be eligible to purchase nomination forms.

Peter Obi recently joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress following a transition from the African Democratic Congress.
