Benin, Edo State – Former presidential candidate Peter Obi was reportedly attacked in Benin, Edo State, on Tuesday, as armed men allegedly shot at members of the Obidient Movement during a political event in the state capital.
Okay News reports that the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, raised the alarm in a statement titled “Breaking: Red Alert in Benin, Edo State,” alleging that gunmen followed Obi and leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from the party’s secretariat to the residence of John Odigie-Oyegun. According to him, the attackers fired shots at the gate and damaged several vehicles in what he described as an attempt on their lives.
The incident reportedly occurred during the formal defection of former governorship candidate Olumide Akpata to the ADC. As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had not issued an official statement confirming the attack.
The development comes amid heightened political tension in the state. Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo had earlier warned that Obi must obtain security clearance before visiting the state. It remains unclear whether such clearance was secured before the visit.
