Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has shed light on his decision to abstain from attending the party’s national convention in Anambra State.

Speaking during a session with Nigerians on X Space hosted by Parallel Facts on Friday, Obi cited the failure of the party leadership to conduct extensive consultations with key stakeholders as the primary reason for his absence.

The LP stalwart emphasized the importance of thorough consultation within the party before embarking on significant initiatives such as a national convention.

According to Obi, the absence of broad consultations undermines the legitimacy and effectiveness of party decisions.

“We promised to build Nigeria; we did not promise to build a New Labour Party,” Obi asserted.

Obi’s remarks come amidst internal tensions within the LP, with criticisms leveled against the leadership under Julius Abure for allegedly neglecting inclusive decision-making processes.

In addition to addressing party concerns, Obi also voiced his support for the establishment of a structure for the ‘Obidient’ movement, a coalition of his followers advocating for political reform and progressive change.

“It is the standard practice around the world where movements form themselves into blocs and are part of the political process,” Obi stated
