The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Surulere Police Division, CSP Monday Agbonika, has arrested the driver of the trailer, which container fell off the bridge at Ojuelegba on Wednesday, killing three persons.

This is just as the fallen container, the two affected vehicles and the head of the trailer have been towed off the road to ease the movement of other motorists.

The trailer driver, who was identified as Wasiu Adeleke, was arrested for killing three occupants in a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) after the container of his cement-laden trailer fell off the overhead Ojuelegba bridge.

Although the container had crushed the SUV, the driver of the white Nissan saloon car, one Lasisi Akeem, whose car was partially crushed by the heavy duty truck, survived the crash.

The MAN Diesel truck with registration number EPE 46 XK, which was driven by Adeleke, a resident of Ibadan, was carrying a 20-feet container loaded with cement and armoured doors.

The heavy-duty vehicle was moving on Ojuelegba bridge outward Lagos, when the container fell off the truck because it wasn’t properly latched and landed on the two cars.

The affected vehicles were a black Toyota brand with registration number SD 532 CN and a white Nissan Sunny saloon with registration number DG 750 LND.

After hours of sawing out the container parts, it was evacuated from the top of the SUV and the bodies of the three male occupants, including the driver, were recovered.

As at press time, the identities of the deceased persons were yet unknown given the mangled state of the crushed SUV and its occupants.

The head of the trailer has been recovered and has been taken to the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) office, while the container, the Toyota SUV and the Nissan car have been evacuated from the road.

The bodies of the victims, which were confirmed dead by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) medical personnel, have been deposited at the Lagos Mainland General Hospital, Yaba, pending their claim by their family members.

To also ensure the cement-laden container is not vandalised, the police have been deployed to safeguard it.
