Two people have died and eight others were injured following a violent shooting that erupted outside a church in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Wednesday.

The incident occurred in the parking lot of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints while a funeral service was taking place inside.

Police spokesperson Glen Mills confirmed that an altercation outside the chapel escalated quickly, resulting in multiple gunshots that were captured by nearby surveillance cameras. Of the eight surviving victims, three are reported to be in critical condition as authorities continue their search for the suspects.

A manhunt has been launched to apprehend those responsible, with the FBI currently assisting local police in the investigation.

Okay News gathered that while the specific motive is still being determined, officials stated during a televised press conference that they do not believe this was a targeted attack against the religion or the church itself.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy, emphasizing the sanctity of the space intended for worship and mourning. They have pledged full cooperation with law enforcement as investigators interview dozens of witnesses who were attending the memorial service.

The shooting marks another significant instance of gun violence in the United States, leaving the local community in shock as they await further updates on the suspects.
