Asaba, Nigeria – The Nigeria Police Force has stepped up its investigation into the alleged sexual assault incident in Ozoro, Delta State, with a high-level visit led by the Delta State Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola. The visit formed part of efforts to gather facts, reassure residents, and strengthen collaboration with community stakeholders.
Okay News reports that the police delegation, which included senior officers such as the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, engaged traditional authorities, government officials, student leaders, and some of the victims during the visit. The Commissioner also paid a courtesy call on the traditional ruler of Ozoro Kingdom, Anthony Uvietobore Ogbogbo, where he provided updates on the ongoing investigation and reiterated the Command’s zero-tolerance stance on sexual and gender-based violence.
During the engagement, the police boss described the incident as deeply troubling and a stain on the image of the community, the state, and the country at large. He emphasized that the Inspector-General of Police is closely monitoring developments and assured that all individuals found culpable would be arrested and prosecuted. He further noted that additional security measures are being implemented to prevent a recurrence, particularly in student-populated areas.
Community leaders strongly condemned the incident, stressing that such acts have no place in the cultural values of the people. The traditional ruler warned that future festivals or gatherings in the kingdom must receive prior approval from the palace to ensure proper coordination and prevent abuse by criminal elements. Local government authorities also clarified that the event in question was not an official cultural festival but one that was poorly managed and allegedly hijacked by miscreants.
Student representatives commended the police for their swift response and noted that dialogue was deliberately chosen over protest to avoid escalation. Authorities also highlighted the availability of the Gender Desk at the State Police Headquarters, urging victims to report cases with the assurance of confidentiality and support.
The police command reaffirmed its commitment to justice and public safety, calling on members of the public to provide useful information that could aid in identifying and prosecuting those responsible.
