Osogbo, Osun State, Nigeria — Authorities in southwestern Nigeria have begun an investigation after a commercial driver was allegedly shot dead on Sunday, March 15, 2026, along the Iwo–Osogbo Road in Osun State.

The Osun State Police Command, a regional division of the Nigeria Police Force responsible for law enforcement in Osun State, confirmed that the incident occurred near a police roadblock around 10:00 a.m. West African Time (WAT, GMT+1).

Okay News reports that the shooting caused anger among residents after a video circulated showing the vehicle driven by the victim riddled with bullet holes while a crowd gathered at the scene demanding accountability.

Initial reports suggested that the shooting happened near the Onibueja area of Ido-Osun, a community in Egbedore Local Government Area of Osun State in southwestern Nigeria. Witnesses said the gunmen were security personnel in civilian clothing who had been pursuing the driver from the Iwo end of the road.

The individuals later identified as the suspected shooters were officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), a federal agency responsible for border control and trade regulation in Nigeria.

In a statement confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the suspected officers had been identified as Kolawole Suuti and Danjuma Samuel, both members of the Nigeria Customs Service.

The police initially withheld the identity of the deceased while investigations began. However, during an interview on Monday, March 16, 2026, Ojelabi revealed that the victim had been identified as 41-year-old Anayo Azikwe Michael, who was originally from Delta State in southern Nigeria.

“The deceased was from Delta State. His name is Anayo Azikwe Michael, 41,” Ojelabi said.

According to the police spokesperson, relatives of the victim were already traveling to Osun State following the incident.

Authorities also confirmed that the two Customs officers linked to the shooting had reported to the police command headquarters and were currently being held as the investigation continues.

Police officials said the inquiry would not only focus on the suspected Customs officers but also examine the conduct of police personnel stationed at the roadblock near where the shooting occurred.

“We are still on the matter. We will conclude the investigation between today and tomorrow,” Ojelabi said.

“The two suspects (Customs operatives) are still with the police. We are also subjecting the police officers at the scene to investigation for verification. We won’t leave any stone unturned in getting to the root of the matter.”

The incident has intensified public concern about the conduct of security agencies on Nigerian highways, where confrontations between enforcement officers and motorists sometimes lead to violence. Local residents who gathered at the scene called for a full investigation to ensure those responsible are identified and punished.

Authorities have not yet announced whether formal charges will be filed, but police say the outcome of the investigation will determine the next legal steps.
