ADO-EKITI, Nigeria — The Ekiti State Police Command has rescued surviving members of the Christ Apostolic Church who were abducted by gunmen on April 28, 2026, from the Eda-Oniyo community within the Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State, Nigeria. One of the church worshippers died while in captivity before the rescue operation was completed.
Okay News reports that the Ekiti State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, confirmed the development in a signed statement released to journalists on Monday, July 6, 2026. The official statement confirmed that the operation involved a collaborative tactical deployment of security forces across the region.
The rescue followed sustained intelligence-led operations and coordinated efforts by the Nigeria Police Force, the military, other security agencies, the Amotekun Corps, local hunters, and the Ekiti State Government. Security forces have transported the freed victims to an undisclosed hospital for comprehensive medical examinations and treatment.
Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, CP Falade Adegoroye Micheal, commended the dedication, professionalism, and synergy exhibited by all security stakeholders whose collective efforts culminated in the successful rescue of the victims. He further expressed appreciation to the Ekiti State Government under the leadership of Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji for providing logistics and structural support to the state commands during the tracking phase.
“The successful rescue followed sustained intelligence-led operations and coordinated efforts by the Nigeria Police Force, the Military, other security agencies, the Amotekun Corps, local hunters, and the Ekiti State Government,” the statement said. “The rescued victims have since been taken to the hospital for medical examination and treatment to ascertain their health condition and ensure they receive adequate medical care.”
The Ekiti State Police Command stated that active security operations are ongoing within the local forests to identify and apprehend the fleeing perpetrators. Residents of the state have been advised by the leadership of the command to maintain heightened vigilance and relay any relevant information regarding suspicious movements to local law enforcement stations.
