The Nigeria Police Force has taken swift action after a video showing officers extorting motorists went viral on Monday. In the footage, a police officer is seen demanding ₦5,000 or five litres of fuel from drivers who could not produce proof of registration with the Electronic Central Motor Registry (ECMR).

Reacting promptly, the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, condemned the officers’ conduct in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter). He said, “This action is utterly condemned. The officers have been identified and summoned to Force Headquarters for necessary action.”

Adejobi further emphasized the Force’s zero tolerance for misconduct, stating, “We will not tolerate any act of indiscipline or unprofessionalism. We will update the public on our decisions as soon as possible. Thanks.”

The police’s decisive response follows growing public concern over corruption and harassment by law enforcement officials. The incident has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many Nigerians calling for accountability and reform.
