Adebowale Lawal serves as the Police Commissioner for Ondo State in southwestern Nigeria. Accordingly, Lawal addressed journalists regarding the Akure bomb plot. Consequently, he confirmed the raid happened on Wednesday, April 15, 2026.

The Nigeria Police Force [NPF] apprehended five men and one woman. Okay News reports that the ages of the suspects range from 39 to 56. Meanwhile, Lawal described the operation as a major breakthrough.

Officers acted swiftly on credible intelligence regarding a criminal syndicate. Subsequently, they raided an apartment in the Oke-Odu area. This neighborhood sits within Akure, the capital city of Ondo State.

Investigating the Akure Bomb Plot

During the raid, detectives seized numerous items for manufacturing Improvised Explosive Devices [IEDs]. Additionally, they confiscated 217 bottles and a large bag of sugar. Furthermore, officers discovered 17 mobile phones and two laptop computers.

The police also recovered exactly ₦187,000 (about $140). Additionally, authorities seized the naira cash alongside an external hard drive and two motorcycles. Indeed, early assessments indicate the group planned to attack government infrastructure.

Lawal stated, “A document mapping out potential target locations was also recovered.” Consequently, this document suggested a premeditated and coordinated plan. Therefore, police intervention averted widespread destruction and a significant loss of life.

The commissioner strongly condemned the planned violent attacks. Accordingly, he advised property managers to investigate prospective tenants thoroughly. Ultimately, this background check prevents criminals from securing operational bases.

Police Tackle Cultism Beyond the Akure Bomb Plot

Meanwhile, police officers recorded another operational success beyond the Akure bomb plot. Specifically, the Special Anti-Cultism Squad raided nearby Ondo Town. Consequently, operatives arrested 10 suspects during the early hours of Wednesday, West Africa Time [WAT, GMT+1].

Prominent among the detainees is Oluwatosin Temitope. People locally know the suspect as “T-Money.” Furthermore, authorities consider him a notorious figure on their wanted list.

Early findings link Temitope to a shooting in March 2026. Similarly, police connect him to another violent incident on Sunday, July 13, 2025. Subsequently, officers recovered one firearm, two cutlasses, and a battle axe.

Preliminary investigations reveal the suspects belong to notorious secret societies. Specifically, these violent groups include the Aiye, Eiye, and Alora fraternities. Therefore, police hold them responsible for intimidation and unlawful activities.

Lawal reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding lives across Ondo State. Moreover, he assured residents that his officers remain vigilant and ready. Ultimately, prosecutors will charge all suspects in court following the investigation.
