In a significant development ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, a coalition of prominent opposition figures gathered at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, to unveil a new political alliance under the banner of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Okay.ng reports that the event attracted some of the most influential politicians in the country, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Anambra State Governor Peter Obi. Their presence signals a concerted effort by opposition forces to present a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Other notable attendees included former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, Senator Dino Melaye, and former Minister of Youth and Sports Solomon Dalung. The gathering also featured influential lawmakers such as Senators Gabriel Suswam and Ireti Kingibe of the Labour Party, as well as former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Emeka Ihedioha.

Adding military prestige to the coalition was retired Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, former Chief of Air Staff, who was also in attendance.

The coalition represents a broad spectrum of political interests, drawing members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party, Social Democratic Party (SDP), and other political groups. Their objective is to use the ADC platform to mount a formidable challenge to the APC in the upcoming elections.

Leading the media conference was former Senate President David Mark, who recently resigned from the PDP and has been appointed interim national chairman of the ADC. In addition, former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola was named interim national secretary of the coalition-backed ADC.

This coalition marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s political landscape, as opposition leaders seek to consolidate their influence and present a viable alternative to the ruling party. The coming months will reveal how this alliance shapes the electoral contest and political dynamics nationwide.
