The political atmosphere in Abia State has become tense following accusations by the state government against former governor Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu and his former aides. The government alleges that comments made during a recent political meeting at Ikpeazu’s Obingwa residence risk inciting unrest and violating electoral laws.

In a strongly worded statement, Commissioner for Information Prince Okey Kanu condemned the gathering as “ill-timed” and a breach of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s guidelines banning political campaigns at this stage. The statement highlighted that although Ikpeazu did not formally announce any political plans, his call for supporters to “deliver their booths and units” clearly indicated the start of a campaign.

The government emphasized that while it respects constitutional rights to free speech and association, such rights come with responsibilities. It criticized Ikpeazu for allegedly using the event to spread misinformation and attack the current administration, actions described as “reckless” and capable of undermining peace.

Governor Alex Otti’s administration is focused on rebuilding Abia from past misgovernance and refuses to be distracted by political provocations. The government warned that the ban on political campaigns remains active and that violations will prompt legal action.

Meanwhile, eight former Ikpeazu appointees, led by ex-Information Commissioner Okiyi Kalu, issued a statement accusing the current government of hypocrisy and defending their right to political expression.

The Abia State Government concluded by urging citizens to remain calm and law-abiding, warning that attempts to disturb the peace will be met with severe consequences.
