Mongomo, EQUATORIAL GUINEA — On the final full day of his 11-day Apostolic Journey to Africa, Pope Leo XIV visited the Pope Francis Technology School in Mongomo on Wednesday, April 22, 2026. The visit reportedly carries deep symbolic weight, occurring just one day after the first anniversary of the passing of his predecessor, Pope Francis.
The school, named in honor of the late Pontiff, specializes in providing vocational and technological training to the youth of Equatorial Guinea.
Okay News reports that Pope Leo used the occasion to reinforce the Church’s commitment to youth empowerment and technical education as a means of achieving social justice and integral human development.
The Holy Father spent time touring the facility, meeting with students who are developing skills in digital literacy and vocational trades. This visit follows a poignant tribute Pope Leo sent to Rome on Tuesday, where he described Pope Francis as a “courageous witness” whose life represented a significant patrimony for the universal Church.
Earlier in the day, the Pope celebrated Mass at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Mongomo. His itinerary for Wednesday remains packed, with scheduled visits to the Prison of Bata and a meeting with young people and families at the Bata Memorial, honoring the victims of the March 7, 2021 explosions.
Pope Leo XIV is expected to conclude his four-nation tour on Thursday, April 23, following a final Mass in the capital city of Malabo. The journey has been defined by his calls for economic justice, the ethical use of technology, and a renewed focus on the margins of society—themes that were central to the ministry of the late Pope Francis.
