The Federal Government of Nigeria has deployed additional tactical units to Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State in North East Nigeria, following a deadly terrorist attack on a mosque, Vice-President Kashim Shettima confirmed on Thursday, 25 December 2025.

Okay News reports that suspected terrorists detonated explosives at Al-Adum Mosque located within Gamboru Market, Maiduguri, on Wednesday, 24 December 2025, at approximately 6 p.m., when worshippers had gathered for evening prayers. The attack resulted in the deaths of five individuals and injuries to several others.

In a statement shared on his X social media page, Shettima described the bombing as “a despicable assault on innocent citizens and the peace of the nation.” He further added, “President Bola Tinubu has ordered an immediate intensification of security operations in Borno State following the incident.”

The Vice-President noted that the Federal Government was collaborating with state authorities and local security agencies to enhance protection for vulnerable communities and critical infrastructure across the North East and other regions of Nigeria.

Shettima emphasized the government’s commitment to upholding national security, stating, “The Federal Government will not tolerate any attempt to undermine the peace and security of our nation. Our security agencies are working round the clock to ensure that perpetrators of this heinous crime are brought to justice immediately.”

Expressing sympathy for victims and the Government of Borno, Shettima reassured Nigerians that the existing security frameworks would not only apprehend the attackers but also unravel the full circumstances surrounding the assault. “We sympathize with the Government of Borno, residents, and families who lost their loved ones in this attack. The Federal Government is confident that those responsible for this despicable act of terrorism will face the full weight of the law,” he said.

Since assuming office in 2023, President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s unity, stability, and security. Shettima concluded, “We will continue to provide our security agencies with all necessary resources and support to decisively defeat terrorism in all its forms.”
