Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, arrived in Jos, the capital of Plateau State in north central Nigeria, on Thursday to sympathise with residents following recent violent attacks that left more than 28 people dead.
Okay News reports that the presidential aircraft landed at Yakubu Gowon Airport in Jos at about 5:00 p.m. West African Time (WAT, GMT+1). The President was received by Plateau State Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, alongside senior political and security officials.
Among those present at the airport were the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, former Plateau State Governor and Nigerian Senator Jonah David Jang, and former Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong, who currently serves as a senator.
Also in attendance were Senator Nora Ladi Daduut, recently appointed Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, and former Plateau State Governor Joshua Chibi Dariye. Several security chiefs were present to receive the President, including the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
The visit comes after renewed violence in parts of Plateau State, a region that has experienced recurring communal clashes and security challenges over the years. The attacks triggered national concern and calls for stronger intervention from the federal government of Nigeria.
During the visit, President Tinubu is expected to meet with traditional rulers, community leaders, and other stakeholders in Plateau State. The consultations are aimed at exploring measures to end the cycle of violence and strengthen peacebuilding efforts across affected communities.
The presidential engagement is also intended to reassure residents and demonstrate federal government support for local authorities managing the crisis. Security has been heightened across Jos and surrounding areas ahead of the President’s meetings.
Officials say discussions during the visit will focus on immediate security responses, humanitarian assistance for affected families, and long term strategies to prevent further attacks.
