Moscow, Russia – Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has congratulated Mojtaba Khamenei on his appointment as Iran’s new Supreme Leader, pledging Russia’s continued backing for Iran as tensions escalate in the Middle East.
Putin sent the message on Monday following the announcement by Iran’s Assembly of Experts that Mojtaba Khamenei would succeed his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was reportedly killed in US-Israeli airstrikes last week. The clerical body responsible for choosing Iran’s highest authority confirmed the leadership change shortly after midnight.
In his message, Putin expressed confidence that Mojtaba Khamenei would carry forward his father’s legacy and help unify the Iranian people during what he described as a period of severe challenges. The Russian leader reaffirmed Moscow’s “unwavering support” and solidarity with Iran at a time when the country is confronting armed aggression.
Mojtaba Khamenei had long been considered a potential successor despite not holding a formal government position. Reports said he was selected over other contenders including cleric Alireza Arafi, hardliner Mohsen Araki and Hassan Khomeini, the grandson of Iran’s revolutionary founder.
Meanwhile, separate reports indicated that Russia has been providing Iran with intelligence on the positions of American military assets in the Middle East, including warships and aircraft. According to The Washington Post, three officials familiar with the matter said Moscow had shared such information since the conflict began, potentially aiding Iran in targeting US forces in the region.
