ABUJA, Nigeria – The Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), the flagship social intervention platform founded by the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has disbursed a total of ₦819 million (approximately $532,000) in direct economic empowerment grants to 1,638 widows of fallen personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the Nigeria Police Force.
Announced during a ceremony in Abuja on Thursday, August 27, 2026, the second edition of the social investment initiative provided ₦500,000 (approximately $325) in business recapitalisation and startup capital directly to each beneficiary’s bank account.
Okay News reports that under the disbursement breakdown, ₦657.5 million was allocated to 1,315 widows of fallen military personnel, while ₦161.5 million was designated for 323 widows of deceased police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty between May 2023 and August 2026.
“Today, we are providing financial support of ₦500,000 each to 1,638 widows of our fallen heroes, covering those who have lost their husbands in line of duty since the assumption of office of Mr. President,” Senator Tinubu said. “This will enable you to recapitalise an existing business or start a business of your choice to care for your families. As I speak, your accounts are being credited by Zenith Bank; this is just a symbolic presentation today.”
The First Lady, who serves as National Chairman of the RHI, urged the recipients to look toward the future with determination, describing them as resilient partners in nation-building rather than passive victims of circumstance.
“We at the Renewed Hope Initiative recognise that the widows are not victims; they are survivors. You have shown extraordinary courage in the face of adversity, and we are here to offer a helping hand as we chart a new path forward,” she added, conveying President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s appreciation for the sacrifices made by security personnel to preserve the country’s territorial integrity.
The latest exercise expands upon the initial pilot phase conducted in November 2023, where ₦250,000 was awarded to 1,420 beneficiaries through the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association, following an administrative cleanup of bank verification records.
Speaking at the presentation, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, and the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, commended the First Lady and the RHI leadership for their sustained compassion and tangible welfare interventions, reaffirming that the nation remains committed to supporting the families of security operatives who paid the supreme price.
