The Federal Government through the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) has clarified that Remita, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)-approved payment gateway, will remain operational despite the introduction of the new Treasury Management and Revenue Assurance System (TMRAS). This assurance was provided in a statement issued on Tuesday, March 4, by the OAGF spokesperson, Bawa Mokwa.
Mokwa explained that Remita will be integrated into TMRAS alongside other eligible Payment Solution Service Providers (PSSPs) to promote payment liberalization. “Remita is one of the secure channels for revenue payment, but there are several others. TMRAS will now allow these other licensed payment platforms to connect. This means it won’t be limited to Remita alone; all CBN-licensed payment service providers will be able to operate,” the statement noted.
The Federal Government recently launched TMRAS to replace the Remita platform. The first phase, which began on March 4, 2025, focuses on naira-denominated payments and collections, automatic tax deductions, and enhanced financial oversight. The second phase, scheduled for June 1, 2025, will introduce foreign exchange transactions, integration with MDA Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, and a budget module for non-budgetary MDAs.
The OAGF stated that TMRAS was developed following directives from President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, to strengthen treasury revenue assurance and improve budget performance across ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs). “TMRAS is designed to coordinate, streamline, and manage the Federal Government’s revenue collections and payments for all MDAs. It will liberalize government revenue payment processes, enhance revenue collections, and enable efficient, timely analysis of transaction data,” the office explained.
The OAGF also revealed that the government is working to take over the management of the front-end payment infrastructure, which has been managed by SystemSpecs, the company behind Remita, since 2012. This transition aims to expand the revenue collection system to include other CBN-licensed payment solution providers.
The OAGF advised revenue payers and the public to continue using Remita for federal government transactions and directed them to visit www.fgntreasury.gov.ng for further payment instructions. This move is part of broader efforts to modernize Nigeria’s revenue collection system and ensure greater efficiency and transparency in government transactions.
