Nigerian highlife music has lost one of its iconic figures as Godwin ‘Kabaka’ Opara, the renowned highlife singer, is dead.

His record label, Derda Promotions, confirmed his demise in a statement on Friday.

According to Ammarachi Anyanwu, the chief operating officer of Derda Promotions, Kabaka breathed his last on Thursday. However, the cause of his death was not disclosed.

In the statement, Derda Promotions expressed deep sadness over the loss of the esteemed artist, describing Kabaka as an icon who pioneered and revolutionized highlife music.

Kabaka’s musical journey was illustrious, spanning several decades, genres, and bands. He co-founded The Oriental Brothers International Band in 1973, a highlife powerhouse renowned for its socially conscious lyrics, instrumental mastery, and authentic sound that captivated millions across Africa and beyond.

In 1976, Kabaka embarked on a solo career, forming The Kabaka International Guitar Band. Throughout his solo career, he released fourteen albums and created hits like ‘Mangala Special’, captivating audiences with his infectious highlife music.

Known for his versatility and creativity, Kabaka also ventured into Ezebongo rhythms, showcasing his musical prowess. Later, he joined forces with The Imo City Band, further solidifying his status as a highlife legend.

In September 2023, Kabaka made a triumphant return to the music scene with the album ‘The Return of Kabaka’, released with the support of Derda Promotions. The album garnered over a million streams and trended as one of the top 100 albums worldwide.
