The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has commenced a 7-day warning strike across all its centers nationwide, starting from August 26, 2024, at 12 am. The strike is a call to action for the release of their kidnapped colleague, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, who has been in captivity for over eight months.

According to NARD President, Dr. Dele Abdullahi, the decision was made during an emergency virtual meeting held on August 25, 2024. The strike will be total, with no emergency care provided during the period.

Dr. Popoola, a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna, was abducted nearly eight months ago, along with her husband and nephew. While her husband was released in March, Dr. Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity.

This strike follows weeks of protests by NARD members in tertiary hospitals across the nation, demanding Dr. Popoola’s immediate release. The association is urging authorities to take action to secure her safe return.
