Kano, Kano State, Nigeria – The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, held a private meeting on Tuesday night with a delegation representing the state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, following an Iftar dinner for top government officials at the historic Gidan Rumfa palace. The closed-door gathering has heightened speculation about the government’s position in the ongoing dispute over the emirship in Kano State, northern Nigeria.

The meeting was confirmed by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Tofa, in a Facebook post early Wednesday. He stated that the governor’s delegation, which included the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ibrahim; the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Sulaiman Wali Sani; and himself, met privately with the Emir shortly after the Iftar. Tofa wrote, “Shortly after the Iftar at Emir’s Palace, the governor’s delegation had a closed-door meeting with His Highness.”

Observers are closely watching the discussions as uncertainty grows over the annual Durbar festival, a centuries-old cultural procession held in Kano to mark major Islamic celebrations. Conflicting statements from government officials have left residents unsure whether the event will proceed this year.

The tensions trace back to the unresolved legal challenge over the Kano emirship stool. Muhammadu Sanusi II was reinstated as Emir in 2024 by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf after a previous removal, but Aminu Ado Bayero has continued to contest his dethronement in court. While the state government has suggested that a resolution may soon emerge, the Iftar gathering and subsequent private talks are seen by many as signaling closer relations between Sanusi II and the state administration.

As the Sallah festival approaches, attention is shifting to who will oversee the Durbar procession and under whose authority it will be conducted. The outcome of these discussions is expected to have implications for both local traditions and political alignments in Kano State.

Okay News reports that the Emirship dispute, already a source of political tension, continues to draw national and international attention as the festival season approaches in northern Nigeria.
