Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced an increase in scholarships and bursaries for students of Lagos State origin in tertiary institutions. The governor disclosed this during a one-day interactive session with Students Union Leaders and Stakeholders in Lagos State, organized by the Ministry of Tertiary Education.

Governor Sanwo-Olu revealed that his administration would raise the scholarships to N225,000 and N60,000, respectively, for indigene students, as opposed to the previous amounts of N200,000 and N50,000. Additionally, he extended scholarships to less privileged and physically challenged students in public tertiary institutions, emphasizing that the scholarships would not be restricted to Lagos indigenes alone.

Furthermore, the governor announced the appointment of four former Students Union leaders, namely Eniola Opeyemi, Kayode Samuel, Giwa Moore, and Adeola Adewunmi, as his Senior Special Assistants (SSAs).

During the interactive session held at the Adeyemi Bero Hall, Alausa, Governor Sanwo-Olu affirmed his administration’s commitment to engaging constructively with students and enhancing infrastructure in public institutions. He reiterated the government’s dedication to fostering a conducive environment for students across all public tertiary institutions in Lagos.

The event, which lasted over three hours, saw the participation of members of the state cabinet, stakeholders in the tertiary education sector, and delegates from 13 public tertiary institutions in Lagos State.

In his remarks, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of the interactive session, describing it as a confidence-building process between the government and the governed. He underscored the need for students and stakeholders to express their opinions and suggestions to overcome challenges facing the collective existence of the people.

Lagos State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for his unwavering support, assuring that the ministry would sustain the legacy of excellence in tertiary education. He highlighted the government’s prioritization of students’ welfare and infrastructural development across campuses, noting the remarkable stability in academic calendars and the absence of student unrest or staff industrial disharmony in state-owned institutions.
