Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged residents of the state to remain peaceful and tolerant of different views and opinions as the state prepares for the governorship election on March 11.
The governor made this appeal via a statement posted on his Twitter account on Thursday, saying that Lagos is known for its diversity and harmony among various ethnic groups.
He said: “Lagos is our home. It is where we live, work and play. It is where we have built our dreams and aspirations. It is where we have enjoyed peace and prosperity for decades. We must not allow anything or anyone to threaten this peace.”
He added that Lagosians should not be swayed by rumours or incitements that could cause violence or disruption of the electoral process.
He said: “We must come together and keep the peace. We must respect each other’s rights and choices. We must shun any act of violence or intimidation that could mar our democracy. We must allow the process to continue unhindered across the state while we maintain peace and decorum.”
Sanwo-Olu also assured residents that security agencies are on alert to ensure that law and order are maintained before, during and after the election.
He said: “I appeal to all Lagosians to cooperate with the security agencies and report any suspicious activity or persons to them. I also urge all political parties and candidates to conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly. We must uphold the sanctity of our votes and the integrity of our democracy.”
The governor also thanked Lagosians for their support and confidence in his administration, saying that he remains committed to delivering good governance and development to the state.
He said: “I appreciate your trust and support for our administration. We have worked hard to fulfil our promises and improve your lives. We have more work to do and more projects to complete. I ask for your continued support as we seek another mandate to serve you better.”
Sanwo-Olu appealed to Lagosians to come out en masse on March 11 and exercise their civic rights peacefully.
He said: “I urge you all to come out on election day and vote for your preferred candidates. Your vote is your voice. Your vote is your power. Your vote counts. Let us make Lagos proud by voting peacefully.”
