The Senate has confirmed the appointment of retired Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Hashimu Salihu Argungu as the new Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC). The confirmation comes after the consideration of a report by the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, chaired by Senator Abdulhamid Ahmed.

Argungu replaces former Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, who was appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2023. President Bola Tinubu had nominated Argungu as PSC Chairman on June 10, alongside Onyemuche Nnamani as Secretary and DIG Fredrick Taiwo Lakanu (Rtd) as Member.

The confirmation is seen as a significant development in resolving the long-standing dispute between the PSC and the Nigeria Police Force over recruitment of constables, which had resulted in a manpower shortfall of 20,000 recruits in the last two years. The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, expressed hope that the confirmation will put an end to the collision between the Police and the PSC.
