Senate President Godswill Akpabio, former governor of Akwa Ibom State in southeastern Nigeria, has distributed fully equipped fishing boats to women and cooperative societies in riverine communities during the Christmas season.
Okay News reports that the empowerment programme took place on Boxing Day at Akpabio’s residence in Ukana, Essien Udim Local Government Area, targeting beneficiaries mainly from the Eket Senatorial District and broader coastal areas.
The initiative aims to boost livelihoods in communities where fishing serves as the primary economic activity, providing modern tools to enhance productivity and safety.
Speaking through his wife, Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, the Senate President emphasised inclusive support for vulnerable groups, stating that the selection prioritised need over political affiliation.
Akpabio himself highlighted the vital role of women in Akwa Ibom’s social and political stability, describing the boats as a means to foster self-reliance rather than temporary aid.
He commended state Governor Umo Eno for focusing on human capital and grassroots development, while urging continued backing for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Details revealed that the boats came complete with nets, refrigerators, fuel tanks, and powerful outboard engines—some featuring twin 75-horsepower units for larger vessels.
A beneficiary representative expressed gratitude, noting the intervention enables long-term economic independence by equipping women to sustain their fishing businesses effectively.
The ceremony included symbolic presentations and announcements of recipients, underscoring Akpabio’s ongoing constituency projects in his home state.
