Ibrahim Magu

The Senate is set to screen the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission about six months after his nomination by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The upper chamber of the National Assembly is to conduct confirmation hearing on Magu’s appointment on Thursday.

Buhari had appointed Magu as acting Chairman of the EFCC in November 2015, following the removal of Ibrahim Lamorde, and has remained in the acting capacity for one year.

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over Thursday’s plenary session, made the announcement of the screening, while urging senators to attend the legislative exercise, he said, would be conducted by the committee of “the whole Senate.”

Apart from Magu, the confirmation of four members of the commission was also delayed. The affected appointees are Moses Ndasule, Mamman Lawan, Imam Najib Galadanci and Adebayo Rafiu Adeleke.

The letter for Magu’s confirmation was dated June 17, 2016, and signed by the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, who was then the acting President while Buhari was in the United Kingdom on a 10-day medical vacation.

The letter, which was received at the Senate on June 22 as indicated by the official stamp on it, not read by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, until July 14.
