A former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore, has written the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission demanding damages of N500m from the commission and the retraction of a publication where he was declared wanted.

Omisore made the demand in a letter written by his counsel to the chairman of the anti-corruption agency, Ibrahim Magu.

A copy of the letter dated May 25 and signed by Mr. Olakunle Lawal, on behalf of Chief Chris Uche (SAN), was made available to newsmen in Osoogbo on Wednesday.

Omisore’s counsel said his client had gone to court to stop the EFCC from arresting him and the commission was fully aware of this.

He stated that the commission had now resorted to cheap blackmail and character assassination because he had approached the court.

The letter partly read, “We are informed that the publication is not just malicious but falsehood in all respect.

“Our client has not refused to make himself available to the commission but rather has proceeded to the court to seek protection of the court when he perceived that the invitation was a deliberate ploy to unlawfully arrest and detain him.

“Consequently, we have our client’s instruction to request for a retraction of the offensive publication along with the payment of N500m damages occasioned by the publication to our client within seven days of this letter.

“Please take notice that if our client’s demands are not met within seven days as requested, we shall be constrained to institute a civil proceedings against your commission and its Head, Media and Publicity for aggravated damages which certainly shall not be limited to N500m.”

The EFCC had on Tuesday declared Omisore wanted following his refusal to honour its initiation in an investigation into a N700m fraud allegation.
