Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has announced plans to empower over 100 constituents with locally assembled electric vehicles, marking a bold step toward sustainable development and green innovation in Kogi Central.
The initiative is part of her annual constituency empowerment programme, which she describes as a personal tradition of giving back. This year’s edition focuses on promoting clean energy and economic mobility, especially for women, farmers, and small business owners.
According to Udensi Bernard, a collaborator on the project, the idea was conceived during an impromptu visit by the senator two weeks ago. Since then, work has progressed to assemble selected electric vehicle models, all manufactured in Nigeria.
The programme aims to reduce fuel dependency and logistics costs while offering long-term environmental benefits. Bernard noted that electric vehicles are cost-effective, require minimal maintenance, and support cleaner energy use.
“For farmers, it eases the transportation of produce. For entrepreneurs, they lower operating costs. For transport operators, they boost profits while cutting fuel expenses,” Bernard explained.
Beyond economic impact, the initiative seeks to raise awareness about renewable energy, inspire youth-led innovation, and support Nigeria’s transition to sustainable technologies.
“This is not just empowerment,” Bernard said. “It’s a visionary step toward a cleaner, smarter, and more self-reliant Nigeria.”
The official unveiling of the vehicles is expected soon, with anticipation building across the constituency. The senator’s return to office after a six-month suspension has been marked by swift action and renewed focus on community development.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s programme reflects a growing trend of integrating local manufacturing and green solutions into grassroots empowerment strategies.
