Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos has set a new Champions League record by becoming the first defender to score in two finals.

The Spain international opened the scoring against Atletico Madrid in the 15th minute by poking home Gareth Bale’s flick-on, although the centre-back looked to be in an offside position.

Including the European Cup, Ramos becomes the fourth defender overall to score in two finals after former Ajax centre-back Velibor Vasovic, former Celtic left-back Tommy Gemmell and former Liverpool full-back Phil Neal.

But he is the first to do so since the competition was reformatted and rebranded as the Champions League in the 1992-93 season.

Ramos also becomes the sixth player to score in two European Cup finals for Madrid after Alfredo Di Stefano, Hector Rial, Francisco Gento, Ferenc Puskas and Raul

The final is being played in Milan and is a repeat of the 2014 final, which Real won 4-1 after extra time following a late Ramos equaliser in regular time.
