Former Nigerian senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has criticised former United States President Donald Trump over his threat of military intervention in Nigeria, rejecting Trump’s description of the country as a “disgraced nation.”
In a statement shared on his X page on Monday, Sani condemned Trump’s comment on Truth Social, where the former U.S. president warned that America “may very well go into that now disgraced country, guns-a-blazing, to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists.” The former lawmaker described the remark as reckless and offensive, insisting that Nigeria’s sovereignty must never be undermined.
Sani said history would judge Nigerians by their response to such remarks, stressing that he would always oppose any form of foreign military action against his country. “I want history to record me among those who outrightly opposed and condemned any act of foreign aggression against my country under any guise or excuse,” he declared.
He dismissed Trump’s reference to Nigeria as a “disgraced country,” arguing that the nation, despite its internal challenges, has never been conquered or invaded by foreign powers. “My country is not a disgraced country and will never be one,” he wrote, adding that no patriotic citizen should tolerate such a description of their homeland.
Sani also contrasted Nigeria’s record with those of countries that have waged wars or colonised others, saying, “We are not a nation that has ever colonised, enslaved, or invaded any country and killed millions of people. Without such a record, we cannot be called disgraced.”
While acknowledging the country’s ongoing security challenges, Sani urged the Nigerian government to strengthen its military response and welcome legitimate international support against terrorism.
He concluded by reiterating that Nigerians must protect the dignity of their nation and reject all external threats.
