Former Nigerian senator Shehu Sani has criticised the conduct of the United States’ legislative branch amid the escalating conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, suggesting that American lawmakers appear unable to check the actions of President Donald Trump.
Okay News reports that Sani, who made the remarks in a post on his verified X account on Sunday was reacting to the growing Middle East tensions following the air strikes launched by the United States and Israel on Iran in late February.
According to the former Kaduna Central senator, the U.S. Congress and Senate appear sidelined on major decisions that ordinarily require their approval.
“The US Senate and Congress are ignored by the President on matters where their consent is needed,” Sani wrote.
He added that many lawmakers have instead taken to social media to express anger and frustration over the situation.
Sani also questioned the moral authority of U.S. politicians who frequently lecture developing nations about democracy, constitutionalism and rule of law.
“When will the next team of those lawmakers visit the next third world country and lecture them about democracy, the constitution, rule of law and freedom?” he asked.
The comments come amid growing international debate over the legality and political implications of the military campaign against Iran and the role of the U.S. Congress in authorising war-related actions.
