The Islamic Movement in Nigeria, also known as Shi’ite, on Wednesday reiterated its call on President Muhammadu Buhari to free their spiritual leader, Sheik Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.

Members of the group had last Monday faced off with the police after they stormed the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), demanding the release of their leader.

Before last Monday’s confrontation, the shi’ite members had clashed with the police on 16 April, leading to the arrest of 115 of them.

El-Zakzaky has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since December, 2015.

He was arrested following a clash between followers of his group and soldiers in the convoy of the Chief of Army State, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, in Zaria, Kaduna state.

It was gathered that members of the group staged a peaceful protest again in Abuja, shutting down Berger-Wuse axis for more than 45 minutes.

Some of them carried placards, shouting “Buhari free our leader. Buhari free El-Zakzaky and his wife.”

“Our timely rallies, campaigns and other religious activities will continue as at when due and in our usual peaceful ways without fear of intimidation or any recourse to illogical violent means,” one of them said.
