Abuja, Nigeria – Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), popularly known as Shi’ites, staged a protest on Friday at the National Mosque Abuja in Abuja to express support for Iran.
Okay News reports that the group attended the regular Friday prayer at the mosque before launching the demonstration within the premises.
The protesters reportedly began chanting “Allahu Akbar” as they gathered in large numbers shortly after prayers. Within minutes, the crowd grew to about 200 people.
Demonstrators were heard chanting slogans such as “shame to America” and “shame to Israel,” while expressing solidarity with Iran.
Similar protests were also reported at the Idumota Central Mosque in Lagos, as well as on the streets of Kaduna and Bauchi.
The protests come amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following the recent escalation of conflict in the region.
Earlier protests had taken place in several Nigerian states after reports that Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, was killed during joint military strikes involving the United States and Israel.
During the demonstrations, protesters waved Iranian flags, displayed portraits of Khamenei, and carried placards condemning the United States and Israel while declaring support for Iran.
