house-of-rep

Hon. Oyetunde Ojo, a member of House of Representatives has said the members of the National Assembly signed President Goodluck Jonathan’s impeachment notice out of provocation and anger.

According to Ojo who spoke to newsmen yesterday in Aramoko-Ekiti, headquarters of Ekiti West Local Government of Ekiti State, his colleagues signed the president’s impeachment notice to air their grievances over the security agents’ harassment on them at the National Assembly’s gate, Leadership reports.

He said: “To be honest with you, although we were recalled to the house that day because of the emergency situation in the North-East, we have only sat once since the recess, the impeachment notice was signed in anger by us. You remember that we were tear-gassed that day, both members of the two houses.

“The impeachment notice was signed by members, we will look into it, but to the best of my knowledge, I do not think there is a serious level of impeachment of the president now, until we resume at the House.”

He explained that the issue had gone beyond the House and had to do with the survival of democracy.

Speaking on his selection as the sole candidate in next year’s election, the lawmaker who is seeking re-election as the member representing Ekiti central federal constituency II on the platform of the All Progressives’ Congress (APC) said emerging as an unopposed candidate is a thing of joy which shows that the people have confidence in him.

“I will thank my party people, both at the state level and federal constituency. I also thank my people in the consistency, who are even not in any political party. Emerging as an unopposed candidate is a thing of joy and it shows that the people have confidence in me. The mandate belongs to the people and they have unanimously chose me to represent them again. I do not make promises, my people know me very well: what I do is to listen to them on what they want and ensure that I provide these. This gesture will make us to work harder to further please our people and bring more dividends of democracy to them and also empower our constituencies,” he said.

He also expressed optimism that his party would win more seats than the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) despite being in opposition.

The plot to impeach the President started as a reaction to the alleged growing impunity by the Federal Government following the incident that took place at the nation’s National Assembly, where lawmakers were tear gased by the police who barred the Speaker Aminu Tambuwal from entering the chambers.
The impeachment plot spread to the Senate, with a growing number of Senators said to be enthusiastic to team up with the Reps to get the President removed after 130 Reps signed to support the plot to remove Jonathan on Thursday, November 20, 2014.
