The Qatari defense ministry announced earlier on Sunday that the helicopter crashed after experiencing a technical malfunction during a routine mission.
“A Qatari helicopter had a technical malfunction during a routine duty, which led to its crash in the regional waters of the State,” the defense ministry said in a statement posted to X.
“Searching operation for its crew members and passengers is in progress,” the ministry said at the time.
Hours later, the Ministry of Interior confirmed that six bodies had been recovered from the crash site, with efforts ongoing to find one remaining person.
Authorities have not released the identities of the victims or details about the nature of the routine mission the helicopter was conducting when the incident occurred.
The crash happened in Qatar’s regional waters, though the exact location and time of the accident have not been disclosed. The type of helicopter involved in the crash was also not specified in the official statements.
Qatar has launched an investigation to determine the specific cause of the technical malfunction that led to the fatal crash.
