A Cessna 172 aircraft operated by Skypower Express crash landed at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State. All four crew members on board survived the incident.
Okay News reports that the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed the emergency landing. The chartered flight was en route from Kaduna to Port Harcourt when it diverted due to distress.
The aircraft came down in the approach area of Runway 17. Emergency teams and airport police responded immediately, rescuing the occupants.
Two crew members remained in stable condition. The other two, initially unconscious, received prompt hospital treatment.
“The crew declared an emergency, necessitating a diversion to Owerri, where the aircraft subsequently crash landed in the approach area of Runway 17,” NSIB spokesperson Bimbo Oladeji stated.
“There were four people on board at the time of the accident, with no fatalities reported so far,” she added.
No post-crash fire occurred. The runway stayed operational, allowing other flights to continue safely.
NSIB has launched a formal investigation under its mandate. Teams are securing the site and preparing to recover the wreckage for examination.
Director-General Capt. Alex Badeh Jr. extended sympathies to Skypower Express management. He noted relief over the absence of fatalities.
The bureau coordinated with authorities to manage the scene. Recovery efforts focus on detailed analysis of the aircraft.
This incident underscores ongoing aviation safety protocols in Nigeria, with rapid response preventing loss of life and maintaining airport operations.
