Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu officially commissioned the newly completed Tamaje Water Scheme on Wednesday, marking a significant advancement in the state’s water infrastructure development. The project is one of six major water schemes collectively valued at over ₦14.1 billion, aimed at improving access to clean and safe drinking water for residents of Sokoto and its environs.

At the commissioning event held in Tamaje, Governor Aliyu described the water scheme as a “critical milestone” in meeting the increasing demand for potable water, especially given the rapid urban growth of Sokoto city. He stressed the importance of water accessibility, stating, “Access to clean and potable water is not just a basic necessity; it is a fundamental human right.”

Okay.ng reports that the governor highlighted the administration’s dedication to ensuring sustainable water supply, which he identified as a key factor in enhancing public health and driving economic progress in the region. According to Aliyu, the Tamaje Water Scheme has the capacity to deliver 3 million gallons of water daily. It forms part of a broader network of six schemes, which, when fully operational, will supply a combined total of 40 million gallons of water per day. The other schemes are located in Old Airport, Gagi, Mana, Runjin Sambo, and Ruga Liman.

Governor Aliyu acknowledged the foundational work of his predecessor, former governor and senator Aliyu Wamakko, who initiated the water projects during his tenure. “We are building on the solid foundation laid by the previous administration. This is a continuation of that vision,” he remarked.

The ceremony also featured the presence of the Executive Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, who attended as a special guest of honour, symbolizing inter-state collaboration and support.

Emphasizing the strategic importance of the infrastructure, Aliyu urged the people of Sokoto to take ownership of the water facilities and protect them from vandalism. “Protect this facility as your own. It is for your health, your families, and the future of Sokoto,” he appealed.

The governor assured that the government remains committed to completing the remaining four water projects and will continue to invest in the Sokoto State Water Board. He also mentioned ongoing efforts to resolve power supply issues that affect the uninterrupted operation of water facilities.

In addition, Aliyu expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his initiatives aimed at national development and pledged Sokoto State’s full support for the Federal Government’s agenda.

The commissioning of the Tamaje Water Scheme represents a major step forward in the state’s infrastructure agenda, reflecting Governor Aliyu’s commitment to delivering impactful projects that improve the quality of life for Sokoto residents. “Let us continue to work hand in hand to build a better, healthier, and more prosperous Sokoto State for all,” he concluded.

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, while commissioning the project, praised Governor Aliyu for his focus on people-centered development projects. He noted that the governor’s efforts align with President Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda for Nigeria.
